11103453DWHEREAS, Dolly Rose Murphy Goodwyn, a pillar of the Southampton community, died on December 21, 2010; and
WHEREAS, the ninth child born to Lester and Hattie Parker Murphy, Dolly Goodwyn was born on November 1, 1924; and
WHEREAS, married on July 1, 1944, Dolly Goodwyn and Sam Green Goodwyn enjoyed 63 years of marriage together; and
WHEREAS, Dolly Goodwyn’s favorite topic of conversation was always her family, especially her beloved children Deborah Ann, Doreen Celestine, Samuel Bernard, Walter Frank, Eula Paige, and foster son Demetrick Jones, her 12 adored grandchildren, and her three treasured great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, as an award-winning agent with North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company for nearly 30 years, Dolly Goodwyn balanced spending time with her family with working outside of the home; and
WHEREAS, known in her youth as Dot and later as Ms. Dolly, Dolly Goodwyn was an active member of Rising Star Baptist Church for 50 years before joining Galilee Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess, financial secretary, and supervised several church initiatives; and
WHEREAS, a gifted musician and talented singer, Dolly Goodwyn played music for and sang as a member of several church choirs; and
WHEREAS, Dolly Goodwyn remained actively engaged in her community throughout her life, taking part in voter registration projects, serving as president of the Southampton County Chapter of the NAACP for more than a decade, and energizing the Southampton County Assembly; and
WHEREAS, devoted not only to her own children but also to the youth of the entire community, Dolly Goodwyn founded the Boykins Community Youth Center Club; and
WHEREAS, Dolly Goodwyn will be fondly remembered by her children and their families, her many friends and neighbors, and the many residents of Southampton County whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Dolly Rose Murphy Goodwyn, a pillar of the Southampton community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dolly Rose Murphy Goodwyn as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
