2011 SESSION
11103195DWHEREAS, Mattrude Person Sharpe, a beloved educator and respected citizen of Portsmouth, died on September 4, 2009; and
WHEREAS, a native of Branchville, Mattrude Sharpe was born on January 27, 1934, to loving parents Ruffin and Gertrude Person and as a young girl worshipped at Rising Star Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, a bright and hardworking student, Mattrude Sharpe graduated from Southampton County Training School and received a bachelor’s degree from Virginia State College (now University); and
WHEREAS, Mattrude Sharpe married the love of her life, Leroy Sharpe, Sr.; they enjoyed 52 years of marriage before his passing and raised three wonderful children upon whom they impressed the values of faith, education, and service to others; and
WHEREAS, a devoted educator, Mattrude Sharpe taught for several years in the Southampton County public school system, where she was admired for her enthusiastic approach to teaching and commitment to her students; and
WHEREAS, after moving to Portsmouth, Mattrude Sharpe became an active member of New First Baptist Church of Taylorsville and continued to educate others as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher; and
WHEREAS, blessed with a fine voice, Mattrude Sharpe was a key member of the Senior and Combined Choirs and also served as a member of the Willing Pulpiteers, Open Door Club, and Noon Day Prayer Group; and
WHEREAS, an active woman who enjoyed the company of many friends, Mattrude Sharpe participated in several local senior citizen groups and participated in their many outings; and
WHEREAS, a kind and cheerful woman, Mattrude Sharpe will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her loving children, Alveta, Leroy, and Michelle, and their wonderful families; and her numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved educator and respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Mattrude Person Sharpe; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Mattrude Person Sharpe as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
