SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 336
Celebrating the life of Katherine A. Treherne, M.D.

WHEREAS, Katherine A. Treherne, M.D., a beloved wife and mother and respected doctor in the Tidewater area, died on July 19, 2010; and

WHEREAS, known affectionately as Kathy to her family and friends, Katherine Treherne was born on June 25, 1955, to Dr. John C. and Annyce Parker Ashhurst in Tuskegee, Alabama; and

WHEREAS, sweethearts since they met in the fifth grade, Katherine Treherne and her adoring husband, Robert, eloped on the day following her 18th birthday; and

WHEREAS, Katherine Treherne received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee and her medical degree from Meharry Medical College, where she and Robert later established a scholarship for deserving medical students; and

WHEREAS, a respected member of the Tidewater area medical community where she practiced for 25 years, Katherine Treherne was the first African American woman in the Newport News area to establish a private practice in dermatology; and

WHEREAS, serving as a guide and example for new and prospective members of the medical profession, Katherine Treherne served on the Board of Visitors of Old Dominion University, as an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Eastern Virginia Medical School, and as a mentor to pre-med students at Hampton University; and

WHEREAS, a woman with unfailing energy and drive, Katherine Treherne played an active role in connecting medical professionals with the public as president of the Tidewater Dermatological Society, as chairman of the dermatology section of the National Medical Association, and as a dermatological consultant for WAVY-TV 10 news; and

WHEREAS, recognizing the need to provide inspiration, guidance, and leadership to the youth in the Tidewater area, Katherine Treherne played an active role in founding the Friends of Hampton Roads, Inc., and served as president of the Norfolk Chapter of Links, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, recognized as a natural leader and a positive role model in the community, Katherine Treherne received the 2006 Universal Sisters of Hampton Roads Service Award and was honored at the 2009 Annual Rosa Parks Prayer Breakfast; and

WHEREAS, as well known for her beauty and grace as for her keen intelligence and strength of character, Katherine Treherne was featured in two national television commercials for the Oil of Olay Division of Procter & Gamble; and

WHEREAS, Katherine Treherne will be fondly remembered by her husband, Robert; their four children, Annyce, Leslie, Robert Jr., and John; and her many family members, friends, patients, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved wife and mother and respected doctor in the Tidewater area, Katherine A. Treherne, M.D.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Katherine A. Treherne, M.D., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
