WHEREAS, Joel Christopher Robins, an outstanding fifth-grade teacher at Deep Creek Elementary School, has been honored as a recipient of a 2010 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award; and
WHEREAS, Teacher Magazine describes the coveted Milken Educator Awards as “the Oscars of Teaching” because of their prestige and importance to educators over the past quarter century; and
WHEREAS, established in 1985, the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards recognize elementary and secondary school teachers, principals, and administrators who promote excellence and innovation in public education; and
WHEREAS, without their knowledge, exemplary educators throughout the United States are considered by a blue-ribbon panel appointed by each state’s department of education for the unrestricted financial award of $25,000; the financial awards are distributed in the spring at the Milken Educator Forum; and
WHEREAS, Joel Robins attended Deep Creek Elementary School as a child and came back to the school to teach eight years ago after receiving a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Wesleyan College; he also received a master’s degree from the University of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated teacher, Joel Robins uses hands-on technology, games, discovery learning, and problem-solving activities to facilitate learning in the classroom; he has also participated in a Standards of Learning mathematics review committee; and
WHEREAS, Joel Robins’ commitment to creative instructional practices that make learning fun for the students makes him a popular teacher as well; and
WHEREAS, Joel Robins has received numerous awards for his innovative and enthusiastic teaching, including recognition as the 2007 Deep Creek Community Teacher of the Year, as the 2008 Deep Creek Elementary School Reading Teacher of the Year, and as the 2009 Deep Creek Elementary School Teacher of the Year; and
WHEREAS, Joel Robins is one of just 55 teachers nationwide to receive the prestigious award in 2010 and joins an elite group of educators; and
WHEREAS, committed to excellence for all his students, Joel Robins is a worthy recipient of a 2010 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Joel Christopher Robins on his well-deserved 2010 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Joel Christopher Robins as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for his commitment to public education and the young people of the City of Chesapeake.
