Celebrating the life of Irene Pratt Taylor Martin.

WHEREAS, Irene Pratt Taylor Martin of Spencer, a beloved educator and community volunteer, died on April 17, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Irene Martin was born in Lovingston on November 23, 1925, to loving parents Robert Manson Taylor and Madge Pratt Taylor and was one of six siblings; after the early death of her father one year later, the family moved near Spencer, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Irene Martin graduated as valedictorian of her class at Spencer-Penn High School, received a bachelor’s degree from Westhampton College of the University of Richmond, and attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and the University of Virginia, where she received a master’s degree in education; and

WHEREAS, a respected and dedicated teacher, Irene Martin taught school in Sandy Ridge, North Carolina, for two years before going to Spencer-Penn, where she taught from 1948 until she was promoted to a supervisor for the Henry County School Board in 1957; and

WHEREAS, Irene Martin was a skilled educator and administrator who retired from Henry County in 1985 after serving as the director of personnel and supervisor of English and fine arts; and

WHEREAS, Irene Martin then went to work for the State Board of Education supervising beginning teachers for the Western Division until 1990, where she served as an inspiring mentor and helped guide new teachers; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong student of history and genealogy, Irene Martin served many years as chaplain of the General Joseph Martin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was awarded outstanding state chaplain in 2007; she also generously supported the Bassett Historical Center; and

WHEREAS, Irene Martin was a devoted alumna and one of the founders of the Spencer-Penn Alumni Association, where she served for 19 years as chairperson of the George Burton Scholarship Committee; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong member of Mayo Baptist Church, Irene Martin cherished her friendships and memories of family there; and

WHEREAS, Irene Martin was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, James L. Martin and will be greatly missed by her nephews, Richard and Robert; her sisters-in-law, Hazel, Mary, Pauline, Hallie, Everjean, and Virginia; and her numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved educator and community volunteer, Irene Pratt Taylor Martin; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Irene Pratt Taylor Martin as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
