SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 311 Offered January 12, 2011 Prefiled January 10, 2011 Celebrating the life of Walter Holladay Yeaman. ---------- Patron-- Reynolds ----------

WHEREAS, Walter Holladay Yeaman, the former longtime finance director of Martinsville and clerk of the Martinsville City Council, died on June 15, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Walter Yeaman was born on May 29, 1915, in Brookneal to loving parents, Edward Thomas Yeaman and Maude Chernault Yeaman; and

WHEREAS, Walter Yeaman began his exemplary service as clerk of the City Council when he became the city’s finance director in 1944; and

WHEREAS, Walter Yeaman served both positions with great distinction until his retirement as the director of finance in 1981 and as clerk of the Martinsville City Council in 1989; and

WHEREAS, known for his attention to detail and commitment to excellence, Walter Yeaman oversaw the finances for Martinsville for over four decades with great integrity and freely shared his knowledge about local government finances with city council members; and

WHEREAS, Walter Yeaman worked diligently with the Martinsville City Council members as they strove to serve the public; his professionalism and compassion endeared him to others; and

WHEREAS, Walter Yeaman was a member of the Virginia Coalition for Open Government and generously shared his time and talents in the community through his membership with the local Rotary Club and his service with Christ Episcopal Church, where he was the organist for more than 50 years; and

WHEREAS, a true public servant, Walter Yeaman devoted many decades of his life in service to his community, ensuring the integrity of the City of Martinsville’s finances and working diligently with the Martinsville City Council; and

WHEREAS, Walter Yeaman will be greatly missed by his wife, Margaret; son, Joe; and numerous other family members, friends, and the citizens of Martinsville; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated public servant, Walter Holladay Yeaman; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Walter Holladay Yeaman as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
