11101551DWHEREAS, residents of the Commonwealth from all walks of life have made significant contributions to our society; and
WHEREAS, the study of family history can prove to be a rewarding and interesting experience for individuals that can lead to a renewed interest and appreciation of family members and their life experiences as well as increased pride in their heritage; and
WHEREAS, the advent of the Internet has led to more information, including family, local, and state records, being easily available for the study of family history; and
WHEREAS, the growing interest in family history has led to the creation of many resources that can help individuals in tracing their family histories, including genealogical societies and websites; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth, with its long and rich history, has numerous libraries and archives where individuals can easily gain access to information about their family members and insight into the world they lived in; and
WHEREAS, many families also hold family reunions, providing an opportunity for several generations to mingle together and learn from one another; and
WHEREAS, individuals can spend time with older relatives and listen to and record their personal stories, learn about family medical histories, and view old letters, journals, and photographs; and
WHEREAS, families can pursue many activities together to celebrate Family History Month, including creating photo albums and scrapbooks, visiting places of importance to the family, and sharing life stories with the younger generation; and
WHEREAS, the study of family history can provide individuals with an appreciation of their heritage, help family members grow closer together, and lead to the preservation and creation of family records; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly designate October, in 2011 and in each succeeding year, as Family History Month in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate post the designation of this month on the General Assembly’s website.
