Celebrating the life of Marcus Alton Johnson, Sr.

WHEREAS, Marcus Alton Johnson, Sr., of Norfolk, a retired public servant who served for over three decades with the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, died on November 10, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Littleton, North Carolina, Marcus Johnson was born on June 30, 1937, to loving parents Whitt and Otelia Johnson and was one of eight siblings; at an early age, he became a member of Fidelity Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of McIver High School in Littleton, North Carolina, Marcus Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in building construction from Bluefield State College and later earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Norfolk State University; and

WHEREAS, a hardworking and devoted professional, Marcus Johnson began his exemplary career with Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority in 1963 and with great dedication served the organization in various capacities over the years; and

WHEREAS, respected by his colleagues for his dedication and experience, Marcus Johnson was a skilled administrator who worked tirelessly to implement the goals of the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority during his tenure; and

WHEREAS, always willing to lend a hand, Marcus Johnson even came out of retirement and served as acting executive director of the Franklin Housing Authority after that area was devastated by Hurricane Floyd; and

WHEREAS, Marcus Johnson was a man of quiet strength with great faith, which shone through his actions and was nurtured through his membership at First Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as head of the deacon board and participated in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Marcus Johnson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loving wife of 48 years, Marjorie; his three sons, Marcus, Jr., Kyle, and Ricky, and their wonderful families; and his numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated public servant devoted to his community, Marcus Alton Johnson, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Marcus Alton Johnson, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
