2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, Patrice R. Calloway, a beloved educator and administrator from Hampton, died on July 27, 2010; and
WHEREAS, a native of Hampton, Patrice Calloway graduated from Bethel High School and began work as a police officer in the Newport News Police Department; and
WHEREAS, Patrice Calloway noticed the amount of crime committed by youth and desired to make a difference by working with them and encouraging them to grow and develop in positive ways; and
WHEREAS, Patrice Calloway then began work at Hampton University as a police sergeant while pursuing a bachelor’s degree there; she later earned a master’s degree from University of Phoenix; and
WHEREAS, Patrice Calloway began her teaching career in the Hampton City Schools, teaching math at Lindsay Middle School; she was recognized as the Teacher of the Year in 2000 and the Walmart Community Teacher of the Year in 2005; and
WHEREAS, recognized for her leadership and administrative skills, Patrice Calloway then became assistant principal at Lee Elementary School before becoming principal at Bryan Elementary School in 2009; and
WHEREAS, an enthusiastic and inspiring leader, Patrice Calloway worked with staff, faculty, and students to have Bryan Elementary School fully accredited; and
WHEREAS, passionate about basketball, Patrice Calloway coached the junior varsity and varsity girls’ basketball teams at Bethel High School, the varsity girls’ basketball team at Woodside High School, the girls’ basketball team at Lindsay Middle School, and teams with the Amateur Athletic Union before she became ill; and
WHEREAS, an active member of her community, Patrice Calloway also gave of her time and talents as a member of First Baptist Church in Hampton and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, a woman of great energy and compassion, Patrice Calloway devoted herself to fostering the growth and development of the youth with whom she came in contact, positively influencing generations to come; and
WHEREAS, Patrice Calloway will be greatly missed by her life partner, LaKitta Hicks-White; parents, Lawson and Lillie Calloway; sisters, Nicole and Camille Calloway, and their families; and her numerous other family members, friends, and the Bryan Elementary School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a beloved educator and administrator, Patrice R. Calloway; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Patrice R. Calloway as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
