Celebrating the life of Betty Frazer Greer.

WHEREAS, Betty Frazer Greer of McLean, an Australian native who made the United States her home and became actively involved in the political process, died on October 2, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Orange in New South Wales, Betty Greer grew up in Australia, completing her high school training at Our Lady of Mercy College before entering the workforce first in the real estate industry, then as a secretary for the Ministry of Munitions; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, Betty Greer volunteered at shoreside canteens, which provided entertainment to Allied soldiers; it was there she met her future husband, Chief Petty Officer Ben Greer; and

WHEREAS, Betty Greer traveled to Washington, D.C., after the war and married Ben Greer; she then embraced her new life in a new country and immersed herself in family, church, and community work, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1960; and

WHEREAS, after spending several memorable years in the Mariana Islands where her husband was sent to set up the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission for the United States government, Betty Greer and her family returned to the Northern Virginia area and she became actively involved in local politics; and

WHEREAS, an enthusiastic supporter of the Republican party, Betty Greer worked on numerous local, state, and national campaigns, including those for Governor A. Linwood Holton, Jr., Senator John W. Warner, Congressman Frank R. Wolf, and Delegate Vince Callahan; and

WHEREAS, Betty Greer served as past president of the Greater McLean Republican Women's Club and held offices in the Virginia Federation of Republican Women, working with great passion to educate Northern Virginians about the political process and introduce them to the figures who represented them; and

WHEREAS, later in life, Betty Greer continued to be involved in local government as an office worker for Fairfax County Supervisor Nancy Falck; and

WHEREAS, for her numerous contributions over the years, Betty Greer was awarded the National Federation of Republican Women Tribute to Women award in 1985; and

WHEREAS, Betty Greer was actively involved in the community and prized her membership at St. John the Beloved Catholic Church in McLean, where she worshipped and nurtured her faith; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Ben, Betty Greer will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her five children, Colleen, John, Kevin, Janet, and Leslie and their families, and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Betty Frazer Greer; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Betty Frazer Greer as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for her memory.
