HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 69
Commending Tommy Garner.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 11, 2011

 

WHEREAS, Tommy Garner, an admired business owner from Newport News, has rendered valuable service to the Newport News community for over two decades; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Homer L. Ferguson High School, Tommy Garner is the proprietor and operator of Tommy Garner Air Conditioning & Heating Company, which provides quality customer service to the Hampton Roads area; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his business responsibilities, Tommy Garner has dedicated his time and energy to serving the community through his membership on numerous boards, commissions, and committees, including the Board of Appeals and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula; and

WHEREAS, an ardent supporter of local youth, Tommy Garner has generously provided the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula with donations, including a van to meet transportation needs, and in-kind heating and air services for two decades; and

WHEREAS, recognizing the need for local youth to have a place to gather, Tommy Garner remodeled a suite in his rental warehouse to create the Tyler Avenue Boys & Girls Club of Newport News and donated the space rent-free; and

WHEREAS, in 2010 Tommy Garner expertly renovated a building that became the Crossroads Village Boys & Girls Club and the Peninsula Boys & Girls Club Workforce Development Center; and

WHEREAS, since 1999, Tommy Garner and his wife Chrissy have enthusiastically sponsored an annual Christmas Party for 100 members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, personally shopping for items from the wish list of each member; and

WHEREAS, Tommy Garner’s beneficent contributions and dedication to his community over the years have greatly influenced the lives of local youth, creating a legacy that reaches into the next generation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Tommy Garner hereby be commended for his unselfish and generous community service; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Tommy Garner as an expression of the House of Delegates’ appreciation for his many contributions to the youth of his community.
