2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Battlefield High School football team triumphantly captured the 2010 Virginia High School League Group AAA, Division 6, state football championship on December 11, 2010, when they defeated the Hermitage High School Panthers at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville; and
WHEREAS, the Battlefield High School Bobcats ended their 2009 season as the Virginia High School League Group AAA, Division 6, Northwest Region champions; and
WHEREAS, with only five seasons of varsity football to their name, the Battlefield High School Bobcats ended the 2010 regular season of play with a winning record of eight wins to only two losses; and
WHEREAS, returning to the Northwest Region playoffs as the defending champions, the Battlefield High School Bobcats football team eliminated the Gar-Field Senior High School Indians, 17 - 13, in the semifinals before making short work of the previously undefeated C. D. Hylton High School Bulldogs with a score of 48 - 14; and
WHEREAS, the Battlefield High School Bobcats faced off against the Colonial Forge High School Eagles in the final playoff game and claimed their second consecutive Northwest Region championship, with a game score of 42 - 14; and
WHEREAS, despite having home field advantage in the state championship semifinal game, the Lake Braddock High School Bruins could not stop the Battlefield High School Bobcats, who won the game, 35 - 27, and advanced to the state championship final; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of Head Coach Mark Cox, the Bobcats stormed the field against the undefeated Hermitage High School Panthers, took an early lead in the first quarter, and continued in their relentless pursuit of excellence until they reigned as state champions with a final score of 26 - 7; and
WHEREAS, among their many claims to fame, the Battlefield High School Bobcats include Head Coach Mark Cox as All-Met, Northwest Region Division 6, All-Area, and Virginia AAA, Division 6 Coach of the Year; and Jeffrey Beathard as All-Area Player of the Year; and
WHEREAS, the Battlefield High School Bobcats were selected from 16,000 schools to receive one of only 50 prestigious MaxPreps/ U.S. National Guard trophies in honor of their 2010 championship season; and
WHEREAS, the championship victory belongs not only to the Battlefield High School Bobcats football team and their world-class coaches, but also to their families and to the students and faculty at Battlefield High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates commend the Battlefield High School Bobcats football team for their outstanding 2010 season and for winning the 2010 Virginia High School League Group AAA, Division 6, state football championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Mark Cox as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the championship performance of the Battlefield High School football team.
