2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, each year, the Union Cycliste Internationale Road World Championships brings together some of the most competitive cyclists from around the world for an amazing series of races; and
WHEREAS, over the course of nine days, more than 1,000 dedicated athletes compete for the title of world champion in 12 Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Road World Championships races in three exciting divisions: the traditional road race, the individual time trial, and the team trial; and
WHEREAS, famous American world champions of the UCI Road World Championships include elite cyclists Greg LeMond and Lance Armstrong; and
WHEREAS, the UCI Road World Championships races draw crowds of up to 300,000 enthusiastic onsite spectators and are covered by more than 1,000 journalists on 500 media outlets in 35 countries, providing 400 hours of global television to 300 million fans worldwide; and
WHEREAS, the UCI Congress comprises 175 national federations and meets each year at the Road World Championships to conduct business and set strategy for the future of international cycling; and
WHEREAS, the UCI Road World Championships has a major economic impact on its host cities and generates global visibility and positive publicity; and
WHEREAS, Rome, Zurich, Barcelona, Montréal, Lisbon, Madrid, Melbourne, Copenhagen, and Florence are some of the illustrious cities that the UCI has selected to host the Road World Championships; and
WHEREAS, host cities of the UCI Road World Championships are selected through a bidding process similar to that of the Olympics; and
WHEREAS, Richmond, recognized as a premier venue for outstanding athletic and cultural events, including the SunTrust Richmond Marathon and the XTERRA America Tour, has bid to serve as the host of the prestigious UCI Road World Championships in 2015; and
WHEREAS, boasting world-class hotels, a developed support infrastructure, and optimal race conditions, Richmond is the ideal city to host the UCI Road World Championships in 2015; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Union Cycliste Internationale for its organized and dedicated leadership; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Union Cycliste Internationale as an expression of the General Assembly’s enthusiastic appreciation for the union’s positive impact on the sport of competitive cycling.
