HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 976
Commending the Reverend Cessar L. Scott, Sr.

WHEREAS, the Reverend Cessar L. Scott, Sr., serves as the Executive Minister of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, a native of Portsmouth, Reverend Scott graduated from the Virginia Union University School of Theology and received his master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University; and

WHEREAS, as the Executive Minister of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia, Reverend Scott provides leadership to the representative African American mission organization that networks more than 1,000 churches in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, as a leader of this distinguished, historic organization, Reverend Scott manages the Baptist General Office complex on the campus of Virginia Union University in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, through the Convention, Reverend Scott also supports the Children’s Home of Virginia Baptists, Inc., in Petersburg; the Virginia One Church, One Child Adoption Program; the Chaplain’s Prison Ministry; and the United Negro College Fund; and

WHEREAS, beyond the Commonwealth, Reverend Scott and the Baptist General Convention of Virginia encourage support from constituent churches for the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc., the Progressive National Convention, and the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention; and

WHEREAS, throughout his many years of service to the Baptist General Convention, Reverend Scott has been honored with many awards and has dedicated his energies to numerous organizations including the Virginia Union University Board of Trustees and the Council for America’s First Freedom; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Scott has assumed many leadership roles as well, serving on the Corporate Board of the Sunday School Publishing Board of the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc., and on the Executive Committee of the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Board; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Reverend Cessar L. Scott, Sr., on the occasion of his retirement as the Executive Minister of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend Cessar L. Scott, Sr., for his many years of devoted service to the Baptist General Convention, Virginia Union University, and the Commonwealth.
