11105508DWHEREAS, the Korean-American Association of Virginia celebrates 25 years of helping connect members of the immigrant Korean-American community with the rest of Virginia’s population; and
WHEREAS, established in 1986, the Korean-American Association of Virginia has its headquarters in Falls Church to better serve the large Korean population located in Northern Virginia; and
WHEREAS, the Korean-American Association of Virginia strives to build bridges between the Korean-American community and the rest of Virginia’s population by providing essential services, supporting involvement in state and local government, and introducing non-Koreans to the Korean language and culture; and
WHEREAS, the Korean-American Association of Virginia programs include English language courses, vocational/technical job training, health clinics for the elderly, internships and mentoring for the younger generation, and other social services; and
WHEREAS, the Korean-American Association of Virginia works in close partnership with other Korean-American organizations to represent the community’s interests with state and local government, the media, and other entities; and
WHEREAS, the Korean-American Association of Virginia provides insight to appropriate entities on issues that have particular impact upon the Korean-American population, such as immigration, language assistance, law enforcement, education, discrimination, business development, international trade, and women's issues; and
WHEREAS, the Korean-American Association of Virginia has been ably led by its most recent president, William Won Kyun Hwang, who served from 2008 to 2010; and
WHEREAS, William Hwang led the Korean-American Association of Virginia through a period of explosive growth that saw the expansion of its services and new affiliations within and outside the Korean-American community; and
WHEREAS, the Korean-American Association of Virginia looks forward to continued growth and development under the leadership of its new president, Il Song Hong; and
WHEREAS, the Korean-American community in Virginia continues to grow and expand its influence in spheres such as politics, business, law, medicine, and arts in addition to the traditional professions such as small businesses, the service sector, and academics; and
WHEREAS, the Korean-American Association of Virginia is uniquely positioned to help improve the lives of all Korean Americans and all Virginians by serving as a bridge-builder; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Korean-American Association of Virginia on the occasion of its 25th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Korean-American Association of Virginia as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the Association’s many services to the Korean-American community.
