HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 952
Commending Dr. Harry D. Simpson.

WHEREAS, Dr. Harry D. Simpson was a charter member of the first Boys Club in Newport News in 1946, and has provided devoted service as a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula’s corporate board of directors for 43 years and as past president; and

WHEREAS, due to his tireless efforts to secure a facility and establish the club for the children of Gloucester, Dr. Simpson is considered the father of the Gloucester Boys & Girls Club, faithfully serving as a member of the Gloucester Board since its inception and as its past president; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Simpson helped establish Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula's Smart Smiles dental health program, which provides dental care for nearly 300 youth annually; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Simpson’s leadership and commitment to youth have helped Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula experience phenomenal growth; and

WHEREAS, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula has grown from one club in Newport News serving several hundred boys to 15 clubs and a workforce development center serving over 5,500 children in the Cities of Hampton, Newport News, and Williamsburg and the Counties of Gloucester, Mathews, and York; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Simpson’s loyalty to and lifetime participation in Boys & Girls Clubs have earned him a place on the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula’s prestigious “Wall of Fame”; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Simpson’s passion for serving others extends beyond the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, as he has provided wise counsel to many in the community about substance abuse and addiction; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Simpson’s inspiration, impact, and influence will continue for generations to come; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Dr. Harry D. Simpson for his generous support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula over the years; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. Harry D. Simpson as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for his devotion to the young people of the Commonwealth.
