2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, in 2010 the fifth annual Hampton Roads Stuff the Bus toy collection program collected 84,000 toys, filling 12 Hampton Roads Transit buses with donations for families in need; and
WHEREAS, Hampton Roads Transit, Hampton Roads radio station Z104, and WTKR NewsChannel 3 joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program to “Stuff the Bus” with toys for less fortunate families across Hampton Roads; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is an annual campaign in which toys are collected and distributed to children in the community where the campaign is conducted; and
WHEREAS, in 2008 Stuff the Bus collected over 60,000 toys, and in 2009 the Hampton Roads event yielded 82,000 toys; and
WHEREAS, for the 2010 Stuff the Bus, Z104 radio personalities Shaggy and Jade lived, ate, and slept aboard a Hampton Roads Transit bus for 113 hours from late November through early December; and
WHEREAS, the Stuff the Bus program gained publicity through a round-the-clock webcam, frequent radio talk breaks, and local television coverage; and
WHEREAS, each day, the bus was opened to members of the public who were invited to Stuff the Bus by donating new, unwrapped toys; and
WHEREAS, each night, the Stuff the Bus program relocated the bus to a different collection site in the greater Hampton Roads community; stops included malls and large retail and toy stores; and
WHEREAS, at the end of the collection process, Salvation Army volunteers joined the Stuff the Bus program to sort and distribute the 84,000 donated toys to families who were prequalified to receive assistance; and
WHEREAS, through the combined efforts of Hampton Roads Transit, Hampton Roads radio station Z104, WTKR NewsChannel 3, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program, the Salvation Army, and the generosity of many residents of Hampton Roads, the Stuff the Bus program has enjoyed continued success and has provided assistance to families in need; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Hampton Roads Stuff the Bus toy collection program on its successful fifth year; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Hampton Roads Stuff the Bus toy collection program as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for its service to the families and children of Hampton Roads.
