2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, Gladys Evans Jones, an outstanding educator and resident of Hampton, died on February 5, 2011; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from James Solomon Russell High School in Lawrenceville, Gladys Jones received her bachelor’s degree from St. Paul’s College, her master’s degree from Hampton Institute, now Hampton University, and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Educational Administration from The College of William and Mary; and
WHEREAS, Gladys Jones commenced her teaching career in Warrenton before moving to Hampton, where she taught at Jefferson Davis Junior High School and Thomas Eaton Fundamental Middle School until her retirement in 2002; and
WHEREAS, at Jefferson Davis Junior High School, Gladys Jones played an instrumental role in establishing and implementing the In-School Suspension Program for Hampton City Schools, and at Thomas Eaton Fundamental Middle School, she served as the chair of the Science Department; and
WHEREAS, Gladys Jones was an active and contributing member of many educational organizations, including the Hampton and National Education Associations, the Hampton Retired Teachers Association, and Eaton Middle School Retirees; and
WHEREAS, an active St. Paul’s alumna, Gladys Jones served as president of the St. Paul’s Alumni Association and later as the president of the Peninsula Alumni Chapter; and
WHEREAS, as a Golden Life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the Newport News Alumnae Chapter, Gladys Jones held numerous leadership positions, including president and treasurer; and
WHEREAS, Gladys Jones was quick to make new friends in the Red Hat Society, the Friendly Girls Pinochle Club, and the New Year’s Circle of Friends; and
WHEREAS, a charter member of World Victory Church and Life Center, Gladys Jones gave generously of her energies as an usher, as a stage manager for the WVC Players and Company, and as a member of the Compassionate Hearts, the Children’s Church staff, and the Trustee Board; and
WHEREAS, Gladys Jones will be fondly remembered by Herman, her husband of 46 years; her sons, Reginald and Ro-Derick; her grandchildren and great-grandson; and by the many family members, friends, and members of the community who knew her; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Gladys Evans Jones, outstanding educator; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Gladys Evans Jones as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
