Celebrating the life of John Wesley Hill.

WHEREAS, John Wesley Hill, a respected citizen of the Commonwealth and decorated World War II veteran from Deerfield, died on January 10, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a native of the small village of Capron in Southampton County, John Hill was born on October 8, 1922, to James Hinton Hill and Carrie Whitehead Hill and was the beloved brother of Frances Hill Luethy, and the late James H. Hill, Jr.; Zephna Hill Mikelonis; Rozella Hill Shray; and Julia Hill Rose; and

WHEREAS, as a young man, John Hill, along with millions of others of his generation, answered the call to duty when the United States entered World War II; and

WHEREAS, John Hill valiantly served as a Technician Fifth Grade in Company D of the 746th Tank Battalion from August 29, 1944, until June 29, 1946; and

WHEREAS, John Hill received the Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Medal Ribbon, and World War II Victory Ribbon for his distinguished service; and

WHEREAS, John Hill returned to the United States after the war and fulfilled his entrepreneurial ambitions by establishing a successful grocery and restaurant that provided local residents with outstanding customer service; and

WHEREAS, John Hill dedicated his time and energy to serving the community as a member of the Stanly Lodge # 348 A.F. & A.M., 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and Shriner; and

WHEREAS, a man of great honor and humility, John Hill served his family, community, and country with great devotion throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Crook Hill, and second wife, Christine Youngblood Hill, John Hill will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his sister, Frances; stepson, Lee; and other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of the Commonwealth and decorated World War II veteran, John Wesley Hill; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John Wesley Hill as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
