11105165DWHEREAS, Dr. Gordon Kyle Leonard, the retired town physician from Amherst, died on March 3, 2010; and
WHEREAS, a native of Bristol, Dr. Leonard received his bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University in 1960 and his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1964; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Leonard was recruited as the Amherst town doctor in 1965; he operated from his downtown family practice until 1971, then he opened a new office near the Ambriar Shopping Center; and
WHEREAS, for 35 years, Dr. Leonard provided reliable and dedicated service to the citizens of Amherst; he was famous for his late hours as the County Medical Examiner, was known to make house calls, and at times served as the physician at Sweet Briar College, the County Jail, and Old Dominion Job Corps Center; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Leonard was well-liked throughout the community and enjoyed special respect for his keen intelligence, dry wit, and patience; and
WHEREAS, a devoted single father of four sons, Dr. Leonard made it home for dinner each night and raised his children to be courteous, calm, and respectful; and
WHEREAS, after he retired from the practice of medicine, Dr. Leonard enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities including gardening, maintaining a koi pond, and breeding many types of birds; he was one of the few residents of Amherst with swans, peacocks, and ostriches gracing his lawn; and
WHEREAS, following his retirement, Dr. Leonard became an active member of the Church of the Epiphany and a member of the vestry; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Leonard will be fondly remembered by his four sons, Gordon, David, Thomas, and James; his seven grandchildren; and the many family members, friends, and town leaders of Amherst who knew him; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Dr. Gordon Kyle Leonard, retired Amherst town physician; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Gordon Kyle Leonard as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
