Celebrating the life of Jack Edward Corkey.

WHEREAS, Jack Edward Corkey, a beloved entrepreneur and retired Herndon business owner, died on January 9, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a California native who loved to travel, Jack Corkey hitchhiked to South Dakota after graduating from high school, spent two years in Hawaii before enrolling in Cañada Community College in California, and in 1966 enlisted in the United States Air Force; and

WHEREAS, Jack Corkey had experience selling cars in California and joined a fellow airman in establishing “John and Jack’s Auto Sales” outside of Grissom Air Force Base while stationed in Indiana; and

WHEREAS, after pursuing acting and voice studies at Cañada Community College, Jack Corkey traveled to Richmond College in England in 1975, where he furthered his training and met his wife, Laurie; and

WHEREAS, Jack Corkey worked as an actor in New York and Los Angeles, where he appeared in numerous television commercials, several soap operas, and roles in local theater; and

WHEREAS, in 1987 Jack Corkey made the Commonwealth his home when he relocated to Reston, purchased a Merry Maids house cleaning franchise and lent his well-developed musical talent to the chorus at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, where he sang tenor; and

WHEREAS, in 1990 Jack Corkey became a celebrated local business leader when he launched Virginia’s first Great Harvest Bread Franchise, which he successfully managed and operated for more than 20 years; and

WHEREAS, along with his wife, Laurie, Jack Corkey was selected as a winner of the 2005 Best of Reston Award for his contributions to Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, and local theater groups such as Herndon’s Industrial Strength Theater; and

WHEREAS, in 2010 Jack Corkey and Laurie were inducted into the Great Harvest Hall of Fame for supporting fair hiring practices, training young people, and giving back to the community; and

WHEREAS, Jack Corkey will be fondly remembered by his wife, Laurie, and by his many friends and neighbors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Jack Edward Corkey; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jack Edward Corkey as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
