HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 890
Commending Boy Scout Troop 1140 on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

WHEREAS, in 2011 Boy Scout Troop 1140 of Springfield proudly celebrates 50 years of building young men’s characters and serving the local community; and

WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts of America help young men grow and develop by providing opportunities to practice leadership and responsibility and serve the local community; and

WHEREAS, Boy Scout Troop 1140 was founded on July 25, 1961, with Kirkwood Presbyterian Church as its sponsor; the Troop has had 860 young men participate in its many programs since its inception; and

WHEREAS, Boy Scout Troop 1140 members have served the local community through the collection of items for food pantries, provision of care packages for service members, and participation in an annual beach clean-up event; and

WHEREAS, Boy Scout Troop 1140 enjoys the reputation of being a high-adventure backpacking troop, with its own rock climbing crew and the opportunity for its members to hike, rock climb, and backpack at a younger age; and

WHEREAS, over the years, 132 members of Boy Scout Troop 1140 have earned the prestigious Eagle Scout Award, given to only the most exceptional young men who have demonstrated their character and leadership ability through service projects in the local area; and

WHEREAS, the members of Boy Scout Troop 1140 will celebrate their historic 50th anniversary on February 16, 2011, with a special dinner that will remember the successes and adventures of the Troop over the years; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Boy Scout Troop 1140 for its many contributions to the community on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Boy Scout Troop 1140 as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and appreciation for the Troop’s commitment to serving the local community and developing young men of integrity.
