Celebrating the life of Sara Boone Baird.

WHEREAS, Sara Boone Baird, an educator, artist, and author from Richmond, died on January 25, 2011; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from Jackson High School in Georgia in 1938, Sara Baird received her bachelor’s degree in journalism at Mercer University in 1942 and her master’s degree in government and public administration in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, Sara Baird proudly served in the Army Air Corps as a personnel administrator for seven air bases from Miami Beach, Florida, to Washington, D.C., and the headquarters of Air Transport command; and

WHEREAS, following the war, Sara Baird worked as a Civilian Personnel Officer at Andrews Air Force Base; and

WHEREAS, in 1961 Sara Baird began her second career as a teacher at Collegiate School in Richmond and pursued courses through the University of Virginia, the University of Richmond, and Virginia Commonwealth University; and

WHEREAS, determining that young students would benefit from economics instruction, Sara Baird developed an economics education program for kindergarten through twelfth grades; and

WHEREAS, a talented administrator and dedicated advocate for her students, Sara Baird secured funding for the program through the E. Angus Powell Endowment, trained teachers in economics instruction, and assisted other schools in developing economic programs; and

WHEREAS, an accomplished writer and painter, Sara Baird authored, illustrated, and, in 2007, published her autobiography, My Life As Fantasy Has Me Remember It; recounting her youth, the Depression, World War II, and her years in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Sara Baird was active in her community as a member of River Road Church, Baptist; the Republican Party; the Tuckahoe Woman's Club; the Tuckahoe Artists Association; and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, where she studied painting for many years; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by her son, Roger, and her husband, Roger, Sara Baird will be fondly remembered by her daughter, Anne; her grandchildren, Lesley and Sara; and many family members, neighbors, students, and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Sara Boone Baird, educator, artist, and author; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sara Boone Baird as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
