HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 879
Celebrating the life of Walter Ernest Mettler, Jr.

WHEREAS, Walter Ernest Mettler, Jr., a prominent member of the automobile industry and World War II veteran from Williamsburg, died on January 28, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a native of Detroit, Michigan, Walter Mettler graduated from high school and launched a successful career in the automobile industry with the Chrysler Corporation; and

WHEREAS, in March of 1943, Walter Mettler proudly entered the United States Army and served for more than three years in the European Theater of World War II; and

WHEREAS, as a Sergeant in the United States Army, Walter Mettler was assigned to the headquarters battery of the 215th Field Artillery Unit and provided artillery support to the 90th Division of General George Patton’s 3rd Army, his brother Robert’s unit at the Battle of the Bulge; and

WHEREAS, following the war, Walter Mettler resumed his career in automobile sales at the Chrysler Building in New York, returned to Detroit to work at the Warren Michigan Dodge Truck plant, and was promoted to head the truck distribution department in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1966; and

WHEREAS, Walter Mettler retired in 1977 after more than thirty years of dedicated service and made the Commonwealth his home when he moved to Williamsburg in 1997; and

WHEREAS, in Williamsburg, Walter Mettler remained active in community life as the Chairman of the Williamsburg Republican Committee; and

WHEREAS, known for his love of travel, Walter Mettler voyaged across the United States and Europe, enjoying collegiate bowl games, Soccer World Cups, and the Olympics; and

WHEREAS, Walter Mettler will be fondly remembered by his many family members, neighbors, and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Walter Ernest Mettler, Jr., prominent member of the automobile industry and World War II veteran; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Walter Ernest Mettler, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
