Celebrating the life of Felicia Coleman Matheny.

WHEREAS, Felicia Coleman Matheny of Buena Vista, who won a Governor’s Award for Public Service in 2009 from then Governor Timothy Kaine, died on September 16, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Lexington, Felicia Matheny was a 35-year employee of Virginia Military Institute, where she provided a superior level of customer service to the university’s employees and their families; and

WHEREAS, as the point of contact for benefits questions and issues, Felicia Matheny interacted with Virginia Military Institute employees and helped them understand their options in a wide range of situations, from their initial hiring date, through health changes over the years, and at and during retirement; and

WHEREAS, Felicia Matheny met with all new employees at Virginia Military Institute, welcoming them to the school and giving detailed explanations of the comprehensive benefits program, ensuring that they understood their health care and pension options; and

WHEREAS, whenever an employee was ill or injured, Felicia Matheny would provide accurate information in a compassionate manner; if an employee or retiree passed away, she would make an at-home visit to explain insurance claim matters and pension survivor benefits; and

WHEREAS, with a firm grasp of complex details, Felicia Matheny also assisted retired employees and their survivors with questions regarding Medicare, pensions, and health insurance; and

WHEREAS, a knowledgeable and skilled employee, Felicia Matheny received numerous awards from Virginia Military Institute over the years for her dedicated service to her fellow employees; and

WHEREAS, Felicia Matheny was an active and valued member of the community, serving as the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary local and state level secretary and as a member of the Parry McCluer High School Fighting Blues Athletic Boosters Club, Buena Vista Fire Department, and Buena Vista Rescue Squad Auxiliary; and

WHEREAS, Felicia Matheny also volunteered her time and talents to make the Buena Vista Fiddler’s Convention and Buena Vista Presbyterian Church Annual Bazaar successful events for her fellow residents; and

WHEREAS, a beloved and valuable member of the Virginia Military Institute family and dedicated community volunteer, Felicia Matheny served those around her with a cheerful and compassionate heart; and

WHEREAS, Felicia Matheny leaves her husband of 27 years, Edward; daughter, Abby and her fiancée, John; and numerous other family members and friends with many cherished memories; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired public servant and outstanding Virginian, Felicia Coleman Matheny; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Felicia Coleman Matheny as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
