Commending Valerie Scott Price.

WHEREAS, Valerie Scott Price, an admired educator and entrepreneur, will be honored at the 2011 Annual Rosa Parks Prayer Breakfast in Newport News; and

WHEREAS, the Annual Rosa Parks Prayer Breakfast honors those women who exemplify the strength and character of esteemed civil rights icon Rosa Parks; and

WHEREAS, after earning a bachelor’s degree from Hampton Institute (now University), Valerie Price went to work as an educator for the District of Columbia Public Schools, where she gained valuable experience working with preschool-age children; and

WHEREAS, in 1977 Valerie Price moved to Newport News and became a Title 1/First Step Program teacher for Newport News Public Schools; during her tenure in the school system, she decided to return to school and earned a master’s degree from Old Dominion University; and

WHEREAS, an exemplary teacher, Valerie Price excelled in creating positive learning environments where her young students could flourish and master the basic building blocks they would need to succeed in school and life; and

WHEREAS, in 2005 Valerie Price fulfilled her entrepreneurial ambitions by founding GET UP Project Networking Services, LLC, which provides training for child-care providers and parents of young children; and

WHEREAS, an innovative educator, Valerie Price has created three educational games based on Virginia’s Standards of Learning that young children, English as a Second Language speakers, and patients with dementia can play; and

WHEREAS, Valerie Price has shared her insight and experience with colleagues as a member of the Tidewater Association for Early Childhood Education, Virginia Association for Early Childhood Education, Southern Association on Children Under Six, and Parenting Educators Group with the local Department of Social Services; and

WHEREAS, a respected educator, Valerie Price has served as a panelist on Congressional discussions on education and appeared in a documentary on early childhood education; and

WHEREAS, Valerie Price has received many awards and accolades for her distinguished service to the young people of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Valerie Scott Price for her recognition at the 2011 Annual Rosa Parks Prayer Breakfast in Newport News; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Valerie Scott Price as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation and admiration for her commitment to education.
