2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, in May of 2010, Jerry Fischer retired after serving as the Director of Danville Community Development for 27 years; and
WHEREAS, Jerry Fischer began his dedicated career of service with Danville Community Development in 1983; and
WHEREAS, with a continuously imaginative approach to improving and revitalizing Danville, Jerry Fischer is admired for his calm determination to see projects funded and completed; and
WHEREAS, one of the most comprehensive projects that Jerry Fischer directed was the creation of Crossing at the Dan, including train station upgrades, the transformation of the Klaff junkyard into the Newton’s Landing parking lot, the creation of the Riverwalk Trail and the Danville Science Center, and the renovation of the Carrington Pavilion and the Pepsi Building; and
WHEREAS, Jerry Fischer played an instrumental role in the success of such projects as the Danville Braves ballpark on the American Legion Post 325 Field at Dan Daniel Memorial Park; and
WHEREAS, as a catalyst for change, Jerry Fischer is respected by citizens and leaders of the Danville community for his focus on the future; and
WHEREAS, a successful advocate known for his quiet leadership, Jerry Fischer secured $6.1 million in Virginia Department of Transportation enhancement grant funds for Crossing at the Dan and $36 million in funding through federal Community Development Block Grants and HOME funds to redevelop downtown and the Tobacco Warehouse district; and
WHEREAS, Jerry Fischer has been an effective leader, a role model and mentor, and an agent of change in Danville for nearly 30 years; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Jerry Fischer for his longtime service to Danville on the occasion of his retirement as the Director of Danville Community Development; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jerry Fischer as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and gratitude for his service to Danville and the Commonwealth.
