2011 SESSION
11105029DWHEREAS, the proud citizens of historic Warren County will joyously celebrate the County’s 175th anniversary in 2011; and
WHEREAS, on March 9, 1836, the House of Delegates met in Richmond, and, as the minutes confirm, formed a new county, with an area of 214 square miles, from the Counties of Shenandoah and Frederick; and
WHEREAS, the members of the House of Delegates saw fit to name the county Warren, for General Joseph Warren, an outstanding revolutionary patriot and physician who was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill; and
WHEREAS, due to the confluence of the North and South Forks of the Shenandoah River and the ability to cross over the Blue Ridge Mountains, the County has been an important crossroad for the Shenandoah Valley since prehistoric times; and
WHEREAS, the area has been important to the growth of the Commonwealth since John Lederer first set foot through Manassas Gap in 1670; and
WHEREAS, Warren County provided manpower and valuable foodstuffs to support the Colonial cause during the Revolutionary War; and
WHEREAS, Warren County suffered tremendous losses during the Civil War, losing most of its buildings; however, its stalwart citizens rebuilt their homes and local industries in the decades that followed; and
WHEREAS, Warren County has continued to prosper and respectfully adhere to laws governing the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, Warren County has experienced successful growth in industry and agriculture, by promoting a beautiful, safe, and educationally sound environment for its citizens; and
WHEREAS, in the year 2011, Warren County proudly celebrates the anniversary of its birth with many festive and family-friendly events to be scheduled throughout the year; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Warren County on the occasion of its 175th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Archie Fox, chair of the board of supervisors of Warren County, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and appreciation for Warren County’s rich history and the many contributions of Warren County residents to the Commonwealth and the nation.
