Celebrating the life of Thomas Landis Nicewarner, Jr.

WHEREAS, Thomas Landis Nicewarner, Jr., a Front Royal native who was a beloved figure in the community for his work with youth, died on March 13, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a proud graduate of Warren County High School, Thomas “Tommy” Nicewarner married his neighborhood sweetheart, Annie Dodson, and served for four years in the United States Air Force as an air patrol officer at Hamilton Air Force Base during the Korean War; and

WHEREAS, Tommy Nicewarner enjoyed a 23-year career with Sealtest Dairy Products and co-owned a Montgomery Ward franchise with his wife for eight years, before beginning a distinguished 25-year career with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office; and

WHEREAS, a well-known figure in the community for his work with youth as a coach and as the Front Royal Little League Player Agent, Tommy Nicewarner was then Sheriff Armentrout’s choice for the newly formed Drug Awareness Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) officer and instructor position; and

WHEREAS, a respected educator, Tommy Nicewarner spent 18 years as the county D.A.R.E. officer, instructing countless students in public and private schools about the dangers of using drugs and serving as an exemplary role model; and

WHEREAS, even after his retirement, Tommy Nicewarner continued to serve as the officer on duty at Warren County and Skyline High Schools’ athletic events until 2010; and

WHEREAS, one of the longest serving D.A.R.E. officers in the state, Tommy Nicewarner was honored for his distinguished contributions in 2000 as the D.A.R.E. Officer of the Year for the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Tommy Nicewarner coached teams for local youth throughout his life as the Front Royal Little League Player Agent for 34 years, Midget Football League coach, Little League softball coach, and Babe Ruth League baseball coach; and

WHEREAS, Tommy Nicewarner was a member of the American Legion Giles B. Cook Post 53, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 33, and Front Royal Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department, and former member of the Front Royal Jaycees; and

WHEREAS, a member of Front Royal Church of the Brethren for over half a century, Tommy Nicewarner had also attended the Meadow Mills Church of the Brethren before his passing; and

WHEREAS, known for his calm demeanor and great sense of humor, Tommy Nicewarner enjoyed the company of many friends, especially his Retired Old Men Eating Out buddies, and cherished the time he spent with his large and loving family; and

WHEREAS, Tommy Nicewarner helped shape the lives of countless youth and leaves behind a legacy of service to his community; and

WHEREAS, Tommy Nicewarner will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife of 59 years, Annie; children, Michael, Vickie, Diane, and April and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved citizen of Front Royal, Thomas Landis Nicewarner, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Thomas Landis Nicewarner, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
