2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, Joseph Glenwood Baker, a successful entrepreneur and resident of Richmond, died on September 7, 2010; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Glenwood “Glen” Baker graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1949 and received his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1953; and
WHEREAS, throughout his life, Glen Baker harnessed his determined energies and his creativity to form successful businesses that related to his personal interests; and
WHEREAS, from working in the welding and fabrication shop to serving as Chairman of the Board, Glen Baker held nearly every position at Baker Equipment Engineering before retiring and turning the management of the company over to his son; and
WHEREAS, Glen Baker enjoyed time on the water and was a member of the Mathews Yacht Club and Commodore of the Virginia Yacht Club; and
WHEREAS, when establishing Baker Marine, Glen Baker brought together his natural entrepreneurial talent and his passion for sailing and boating; and
WHEREAS, Glen Baker went on to found Baker Financial Corporation, served a term as president of the Utility Equipment Dealers Association, and retired in 2008; and
WHEREAS, motivated by a strong sense of philanthropy, Glen Baker was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow for his generous support and service with the West Richmond Rotary Club; and
WHEREAS, respected for his commitment to the Masonic tenants and moral principles, Glen Baker was a 32nd degree Mason; and
WHEREAS, Glen Baker was a member of the congregation at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Richmond and the Church of Francis de Sales in Mathews; and
WHEREAS, Glen Baker will be fondly remembered by Mary, his wife of 27 years, his many family members, and by those in the community he inspired with his spirited approach to life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Joseph Glenwood Baker, successful entrepreneur; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joseph Glenwood Baker as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
