Commending The Little Oil Company, Incorporated on the occasion of its 90th anniversary.

WHEREAS, in 2011 The Little Oil Company, Incorporated, a third-generation family owned and operated business, celebrates 90 years of providing quality fuels and services to the Commonwealth of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, The Little Oil Company, Incorporated was founded in 1921 in Richmond as Little Oil Company by Charles Malcolm Little and was later incorporated as The Little Oil Company, Incorporated in 1947; and

WHEREAS, the founder started the business by selling kerosene to local businesses and residents off the back of a horse-drawn tank-wagon and then continued to run and expand the company until he passed away in 1950; and

WHEREAS, The Little Oil Company, Incorporated was led by the son of the founder, Charles Malcolm Little, Jr., from 1950 until 1985; and

WHEREAS, The Little Oil Company, Incorporated was led by one of the founder’s daughters, Anne Beverley Little Ward from 1985 until 1991; and

WHEREAS, The Little Oil Company, Incorporated was led by one of the founder’s grandsons, Robert “Bob” C. Slovic, from 1991 until 2002; and

WHEREAS, The Little Oil Company, Incorporated continues to operate today under the ownership and leadership of one of the founder’s grandsons, W. Stratford Ward, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, The Little Oil Company, Incorporated has diligently provided quality products throughout the years through brands such as Esso, Phillips 66, Coastal, Chevron, and Texaco, and currently distributes products under the brands of BP, Citgo, Exxon, Mobil, Pure, and Valero among others; and

WHEREAS, The Little Oil Company, Incorporated operates in multiple states including Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina and is recognized by many from its company logo, the “Little Guardian,” which was proudly displayed for over 50 years on bulk storage tanks clearly visible from Interstate 95 just south of downtown Richmond; and

WHEREAS, The Little Oil Company, Incorporated has been a strong contributing member of the Virginia Petroleum Convenience and Grocery Association; and

WHEREAS, The Little Oil Company, Incorporated and its staff remain dedicated to providing quality motor fuels and top-notch customer service to its customers; and

WHEREAS, The Little Oil Company, Incorporated and its staff remain committed to the founder’s values of integrity, respect, quality, and service, all second to none; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate The Little Oil Company, Incorporated on the occasion of its 90th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to The Little Oil Company, Incorporated as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the company’s 90 years of service to the Commonwealth and its citizens.
