11104533DWHEREAS, the Herndon Woman’s Club proudly celebrated 70 years of fellowship and community service in 2010; and
WHEREAS, on February 27, 1939, Mrs. M.J. Willis, chair of the Virginia Federation of Junior Women’s Clubs, met with 18 women from Herndon for the purpose of organizing a club; and
WHEREAS, originally known as “The Young Women’s Club of Herndon,” the Herndon Woman’s Club was federated in 1940 and met on the second Monday of every month at the Civic Room of the Municipal Building; and
WHEREAS, in the beginning, the Herndon Woman’s Club assisted other clubs and organizations with service projects in the community, making contributions to numerous worthy organizations; and
WHEREAS, during World War II, the Herndon Woman’s Club helped the war effort by making surgical dressings for the Red Cross and sending kits to soldiers; 90 percent of its members purchased war bonds; and
WHEREAS, in 1947 the Herndon Woman’s Club saw the need for a gathering place for local youth and formed a “canteen,” where teenagers met on Saturday nights to socialize, dance, watch movies, and play games, with club members chaperoning; and
WHEREAS, in the 1950s, the Herndon Woman’s Club continued to grow in numbers, necessitating a different meeting place; while using the Episcopal Church Parish House as a meeting place, the Club raised $1,000 to help defray the expense of an addition to the Fortnightly Club Library, which became the Club’s new meeting place; and
WHEREAS, in 1963 the Herndon Woman’s Club decided to hold a scholarship ball to raise funds for a scholarship for a Herndon High School graduate; it proved to be a successful and popular fundraiser and became an annual event; and
WHEREAS, during the 1970s, the Herndon Woman’s Club focused its efforts on eye screenings for local schools while also helping Herndon High School students conduct a water study project, which won the Club a state Community Improvement Project; and
WHEREAS, the Herndon Woman’s Club joined with the Herndon Parks and Recreation Department in the 1980s to host an antiques show that became a popular fundraiser to support local organizations; and
WHEREAS, during the 1990s, the Herndon Woman’s Club continued to generously support worthy causes in the area through its antiques show, fashion show, and the Herndon Festival; and
WHEREAS, the members of the Herndon Woman’s Club have provided much needed support to countless organizations and institutions during the Club’s 70-year history while enthusiastically supporting community endeavors; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Herndon Woman’s Club on the occasion of its 70th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Herndon Woman’s Club as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the Club’s strong tradition of community service.
