HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 809
Celebrating the life of B. Mark Fried.

WHEREAS, B. Mark Fried of Albemarle County, a prominent businessman and beloved community supporter, died on December 11, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of New York City, Mark Fried evidenced as a young man the drive, energy, and compassion that would characterize his adult years; and

WHEREAS, Mark Fried began to work as a child, holding multiple jobs as a teenager to put himself and help put his sister, Rosalie, through Syracuse University; and

WHEREAS, Mark Fried received his undergraduate degree and then received a scholarship to study law at the University of Chicago, where he met his future wife, Barbara, with whom he shared a 53-year marriage that was a true partnership; and

WHEREAS, after law school, Mark Fried was drafted into the United States Army as a private, where he boxed competitively; upon his discharge, he served with distinction as a captain in the JAG Corps at the Pentagon; and

WHEREAS, in 1962 Mark Fried opened, along with his wife and with the help of his sister, the law practice of Fried and Fried, which prospered over the years with the growth in Northern Virginia; and

WHEREAS, a respected attorney, Mark Fried practiced law until the 1980s, when he turned his focus to his many successful real estate development ventures and formed Fried Companies Inc., a property management firm; and

WHEREAS, a savvy entrepreneur, Mark Fried built numerous office, retail, hotel, and residential projects; helped start up endeavors in asset management and telecommunications; owned numerous U.S. car dealerships; and opened along with his daughter, Leah, the Olde Towne Pet Resort in Springfield; and

WHEREAS, Mark Fried cared deeply about others and believed strongly in the American dream; he channeled his time and energy into helping others succeed through his exemplary service in the community; and

WHEREAS, Mark Fried served on the boards of the University of Chicago Law School, George Mason University, and Virginia Community College Foundation and created the Great Expectations program, which encourages foster children in Virginia to attend community college; and

WHEREAS, in 1971 Mark Fried and his wife established Innisfree Village in beautiful Albemarle County, a community for adults with developmental disabilities that continues to provide an inviting, respectful, and acclaimed atmosphere for its residents; and

WHEREAS, in 2000 Mark Fried and his wife relocated from Northern Virginia to a farm in Albemarle County, where they established Charlottesville Area Riding Therapy, a therapeutic horseback riding program for disabled adults and children; and

WHEREAS, a passionate man who lived life fully, Mark Fried was a respected and extraordinarily successful businessman and generous humanitarian whose legacy lies in the lives of those he touched; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Mark Fried will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, Barbara; children, Jon, Adam, and Leah and their wonderful families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected businessman and beloved community leader, B. Mark Fried; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of B. Mark Fried as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
