WHEREAS, the Huguenot Republican Women’s Club of Chesterfield County was selected as the 2010 first place winner in the Barbara Bush Literacy Program/Literacy Month sponsored by the National Federation of Republican Women; and
WHEREAS, the Barbara Bush Literacy Program/Literacy Month began in 2002 and encourages local Republican women’s clubs to promote literacy in their communities during the month of September; and
WHEREAS, the Huguenot Republican Women’s Club was one of 35 clubs from 15 states that participated in the Barbara Bush Literacy Program/Literacy Month; and
WHEREAS, the Huguenot Republican Women’s Club members collected books throughout the year and delivered them to the McGuire Veterans Hospital and the associated Fisher House to provide veterans and their families with reading materials during their stays; and
WHEREAS, the Huguenot Republican Women’s Club members also collected books from friends, neighbors, and family members and delivered them to several community nursing homes; and
WHEREAS, next year, the Huguenot Republican Women’s Club members plan to donate children’s books to the new USO facility at Richmond International Airport, where service members with children often wait with their families for flights and families can wait to welcome service members returning home; and
WHEREAS, the Huguenot Republican Women’s Club provided valuable community service through its promotion of literacy and provision of reading materials to veterans and their families and to senior residents; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Huguenot Republican Women’s Club for its selection as the 2010 first place winner in the Barbara Bush Literacy Program/Literacy Month sponsored by the National Federation of Republican Women; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Huguenot Republican Women’s Club as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and appreciation for the Club’s outstanding efforts to promote literacy.
