WHEREAS, the 1932 Session of the General Assembly of Virginia authorized Governor John Garland Pollard to accept a gift of $100,000 from the Honorable John Barton Payne, conditional on securing matching funds, for the erection of a state art museum; and

WHEREAS, being assured that required additional gifts had been obtained, the General Assembly of Virginia approved on March 27, 1934, an act to define, and to provide for the management, control, maintenance, and operation of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and provide for a governing board; and

WHEREAS, after years of planning, fund-raising during difficult economic times, and construction, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts opened on January 16, 1936; and

WHEREAS, the enabling legislation directed the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to enter into agreements with organizations throughout Virginia interested in art, to assist in the formation of new organizations, and to do such other things as it may deem proper to promote art and art education throughout the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has assembled a world-renowned art collection spanning world cultures from ancient to contemporary times and developed a network of statewide partner museums, galleries, and community organizations to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth through educational programs, technology applications, artists workshops, loans from the permanent art collection, and the organization of traveling exhibitions; and

WHEREAS, through the generous support of the Virginia General Assembly and public-spirited private donors, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has built impressive spaces for exhibiting the Commonwealth’s art collection and presenting international loan exhibitions as well as facilities for children’s education, adult lifelong learning, scholarly research, conservation of works of art, the performing arts, and visitor services, and has preserved historic structures on the museum campus; and

WHEREAS, the trustees, foundation directors, donors, volunteers, and staff of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts have provided valuable service and support over the years, creating a world-class institution that serves the Commonwealth and its visitors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on the occasion of its 75th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to representatives of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation to those responsible for the commitment, growth, and achievements of the Commonwealth’s museum of fine arts.
