HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 781
Commending Dr. George P. Scouras.

WHEREAS, Dr. George P. Scouras served as the Martinsville High School team physician for nearly 50 years; and

WHEREAS, a Charlottesville native, Dr. Scouras shone as a high school football star and played lacrosse for the University of Virginia lacrosse team; and

WHEREAS, after working at Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, North Carolina, for two years, Dr. Scouras made Martinsville his home in 1962 and established a family practice; and

WHEREAS, known affectionately as “Doc” to generations of Martinsville Bulldog athletes, Dr. Scouras began providing care to the Martinsville High School football team in 1962 and to the basketball team a year later; and

WHEREAS, although Dr. Scouras is best remembered for treating the football and basketball teams, during his tenure with the Bulldogs he conducted athletic physicals and administered sideline care to athletes in every season and sport; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Scouras provided compassionate care to students of Martinsville High School and to their injured opponents on the court or field of play; and

WHEREAS, after Dr. Scouras retired from practicing medicine in 2004, he remained a regular fan at many of the Martinsville High School football and basketball games, watching from the sidelines and offering medical assistance when needed; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Scouras expressed genuine surprise when local leaders, past and present coaches, and star athletes gathered on October 17, 2010, to express their gratitude for his decades of service to Martinsville High School; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Scouras was joined by his wife, Celia, and his three children, Irene, Connie, and Pete, all of whom are alumni of Martinsville High School; and

WHEREAS, the Martinsville Bulldog Booster Club unveiled two commemorative portraits of Dr. Scouras; one to hang at Martinsville Middle School and one to present to Dr. Scouras and his family; and

WHEREAS, Martinsville City Mayor Kim Adkins declared October 17, 2010, as “Dr. George Scouras Day” in Martinsville; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Dr. George P. Scouras for his dedicated service as team physician to Martinsville High School; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. George P. Scouras as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for his commitment to the student athletes of Martinsville.
