WHEREAS, Colonel Edward J. Burke, United States Army Retired, of Springfield, who served his country with great distinction and devotion, died on August 5, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Boston College and the United States Army War College, Edward Burke began his long and successful career with the United States Army in 1962; and

WHEREAS, a decorated combat veteran, Colonel Burke served with the 1st Infantry Division during the Vietnam War, where he was respected and admired for his strong leadership and concern for his soldiers; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Burke continued his military service with a second tour of duty in Vietnam as a military advisor to the South Vietnamese, where his experience and expertise were of great value; and

WHEREAS, in 1972 Colonel Burke established the 28th Infantry Association, an organization of veterans who served in the 28th Infantry Regiment during war or peacetime; he worked tirelessly as the association’s president since its founding; and

WHEREAS, for the past 10 years, Colonel Burke also served as the Executive Director for the Society of the First Infantry Division, which perpetuates the memory of the 1st Infantry Division, U.S. Army, and honors the service and sacrifice of its soldiers and units; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity and compassion, Colonel Burke leaves behind a sterling legacy of service to his family, country, and fellow soldiers; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his sons, Edward and Sean, Edward Burke will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife, Sally; children, Michael and Maryalice and their wonderful families; and numerous other family members, friends, and fellow veterans; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a great patriot and soldier and outstanding Virginian, Colonel Edward J. Burke, USA (Ret.); and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Colonel Edward J. Burke, USA (Ret.), as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
