WHEREAS, in 2011 William F. Fox Model School, located in the historic Fan District of Richmond, celebrates 100 years of providing “creative and innovative approaches to teaching”; and
WHEREAS, named for William Fayette Fox, who served as superintendent of Richmond Public Schools from 1889 to 1909, William F. Fox Model School opened in 1911 with 657 students in classes from kindergarten through grade 7; and
WHEREAS, designed by renowned architect Charles M. Robinson, William F. Fox Model School, located at 2300 Hanover Avenue, boasts hardwood floors and high ceilings that are part of the inviting atmosphere at the school; and
WHEREAS, over the years, William F. Fox Model School has undergone several changes, including the acquisition of a half-block of land for a playground, a renovation that added eight rooms, improved landscaping, and the addition of an elevator; and
WHEREAS, William F. Fox Model School enjoys a close proximity to local museums that provide unique educational opportunities, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Virginia Historical Society, Science Museum of Virginia, and Children’s Museum of Richmond; and
WHEREAS, William F. Fox Model School has been ably led over the past century by principals Joseph Saunders, Dana Rucker, Clyde Busby, Louise Broaddus, John Madden, John Jordan III, Barbara Radcliffe Grey, Ronald Herman, Gayle Hefty, and Daniela Jacobs; and
WHEREAS, students at William F. Fox Model School have enjoyed the innovative teaching methods and genuine compassion of exemplary faculty and staff who have earned numerous awards for their devotion to excellence in the classroom; and
WHEREAS, the faculty at William F. Fox Model School includes several R.E.B. award winners and three teachers with National Board Certification; teachers from the school have been selected as Teachers of the Year or as top 10 finalists for Richmond Public Schools for the last seven years; and
WHEREAS, William F. Fox Model School students enjoy music, art, and physical education in addition to their regular instruction; the school also hosts an innovative Spanish immersion program that allows students the opportunity to receive math and science instruction in Spanish; and
WHEREAS, as it celebrates its centennial anniversary, William F. Fox Model School can look with pride at its influence on students for the past century and look forward to continuing to provide an outstanding education to its students in the future; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend William F. Fox Model School on the occasion of its centennial anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Daniela Jacobs, Principal of William F. Fox Model School, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the school’s commitment to providing a high quality education to its students.
