WHEREAS, United States Army Specialist Sean Russell Cutsforth, a native Virginian, was killed in the line of duty on December 15, 2010, while valiantly serving his country in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, born at Fort Belvoir on August 29, 1988, the youngest son of Robert and Vickie Cutsforth, Sean attended Brentsville District High School and was well recognized for his athletic abilities, particularly his love of baseball, swimming, and the outdoors; and

WHEREAS, Sean Cutsforth was active in the Greater Manassas Baseball League, Ben Lomond Swim Team, and Greater Manassas Football League, receiving recognition as an exemplary teammate and mentor; and

WHEREAS, Sean Cutsforth was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, a patriotic young man, Specialist Cutsforth was known and admired for his devotion to duty, commitment to his fellow soldiers, and compassion for others; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Cutsforth had been stationed in Afghanistan for 10 months before insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Cutsforth received numerous awards and decorations for his meritorious service including the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal, and Combat Infantryman Badge; and

WHEREAS, a loving husband, son, and brother, Specialist Cutsforth will be greatly missed by his devoted Army wife, Ashley Cutsforth; their unborn son, Sean Russell Cutsforth, Jr.; and his parents, family, and many good friends; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Cutsforth’s death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm’s way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, United States Army Specialist Sean Russell Cutsforth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of United States Army Specialist Sean Russell Cutsforth as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
