11103341DWHEREAS, Edwin F. Gulick, a passionate leader for soil and water conservation from Fauquier County, died on December 13, 2010; and
WHEREAS, a native of the small community of Casanova in Fauquier County, Edwin Gulick was born on December 14, 1919, to W.W. and Mildred Strother Gulick; and
WHEREAS, an athletic and accomplished young man, Edwin Gulick graduated from Calverton High School and attended the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the University’s first varsity soccer team; and
WHEREAS, Edwin Gulick then returned to Casanova and ably managed the family dairy farm until 1956, and continued to farm for the rest of his life, raising Black Angus cattle, corn, hay, wheat, oats, and soybeans; and
WHEREAS, Edwin Gulick was an enthusiastic advocate for soil and water conservation and dedicated himself to promoting the conservation of the Commonwealth’s great natural resources; and
WHEREAS, Edwin Gulick was one of the founding directors of the John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District and served as its chair for 21 years; he was later named an Honorary Director for his exemplary stewardship; and
WHEREAS, a respected and admired leader in conservation, Edwin Gulick was instrumental in the development of the Cedar Run Watershed Project and saw the result of his efforts when Licking Run Dam and Airlie Dam were completed in 1985 and 1992, respectively; and
WHEREAS, Edwin Gulick helped Fauquier County become a leader in the state in no-till farming when he and several over directors pledged their personal assets to secure a loan for the purchase of a no-till drill; and
WHEREAS, Edwin Gulick proudly served on the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Board from 1988 to 1996, where his insight and experience in land and water conservation were instrumental in helping the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Edwin Gulick received numerous awards and accolades for his distinguished service, including the receipt of the R.E. “Bobby” Wilkinson Award from the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts and the creation of the Edwin F. Gulick Conservation Education Award by the John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District for his contributions to conservation; and
WHEREAS, a selfless community supporter, Edwin Gulick was a member of the Catlett-Calverton-Casanova Ruritan Club for 58 years, and was recognized in 2010 as its Citizen of the Year; and
WHEREAS, Edwin Gulick represented the Cedar Run District on the Fauquier County School Board from 1985 until 1988 and on the Agricultural Stabilization County Committee; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong Episcopalian, Edwin Gulick became a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Casanova as a child and was a 60-year member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Catlett, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, vestryman, and trustee; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Nelle Caskie Gulick, Edwin Gulick will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his two sons, Edwin F. Gulick, Jr., and Robin C. Gulick and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an influential and admired leader in soil and water conservation, Edwin F. Gulick; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Edwin F. Gulick as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory and gratitude for his efforts to preserve the Commonwealth’s great natural resources.
