Celebrating the life of Jason Allen Long.

WHEREAS, Jason Allen Long, an aviation enthusiast, accomplished runner, and resident of Edinburg, died on December 31, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Jason Long was born October 23, 1978, to his loving parents, Jim Allen and Laura Swartz Long, in Woodstock; and

WHEREAS, during his track and cross country career at Central High School in Woodstock, Jason Long set standing school records in individual and team race events; was a five-time state champion in the 800 meter, 1600 meter, and 4 x 400 meter relay; set a standing state record of 1 minute, 53.56 seconds in the 800 meter race; and won the state cross country championship in 1996; and

WHEREAS, before graduating with his bachelor’s degree from James Madison University, Jason Long set a standing record for the outdoor 800 meter, qualified for and competed in the Olympic Trials for the 800 meter, and was honored as a five-time National Collegiate Athletic Association All-American and All-East runner; and

WHEREAS, Jason Long continued to race competitively after college, ran a mile in 3 minutes 59.99 seconds as an ASICS-sponsored athlete, and was named as a top collegiate athlete to the All Colonial Athletic Association’s Silver Anniversary Track Team in 2010; and

WHEREAS, a third generation pilot with a passion for flight, Jason Long loved every aspect of aviation and established an international career as a pilot, mechanic, and licensed professional flight instructor with experience in flight operations in the United States, Canada, the Arctic regions, South America, Australia, Russia, Japan, Guam, and across the Pacific; and

WHEREAS, with more than 2,200 hours of logged flight time, Jason Long held licenses for Commercial Airplane Multi-Engine Land, Airplane Single Engine Land, and Instrument Rating in the United States and Canada; and

WHEREAS, Jason Long completed his apprenticeship and was in the process of completing his Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant Mechanical Certification; and

WHEREAS, committed to flight safety, Jason Long served as the FAA Aviation Safety Representative for the Washington Flight Standards District Office; and

WHEREAS, enamored with the history of flying, Jason Long spent his spare time restoring a 1946 Aeronca Champ airplane; and

WHEREAS, enthusiastic and full of energy, Jason Long was known for his love of hiking, mountain and road biking, hunting, climbing, and canoeing in the wilderness surrounding the Shenandoah River; and

WHEREAS, as a tribute to his memory, Jason Long’s family established the Shenandoah Community Foundation Jason A. Long Running/Aviation Scholarship Fund; and

WHEREAS, his parents, Jim and Laura; love of his life, Alesia; sister, Sara; grandmother, Nellie; and many family members and friends will remember Jason Long for his kind, loyal, and generous nature; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Jason Allen Long, aviation enthusiast and accomplished runner; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jason Allen Long as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
