Celebrating the life of William Daniel Altice.

WHEREAS, William Daniel Altice, a beloved member and former fire chief of the Rocky Mount Volunteer Fire Department, died in the line of duty on July 26, 2010; and

WHEREAS, William “Danny” Altice and Posey Dillon, both longtime members of the Rocky Mount Volunteer Fire Department, were en route to a call when an SUV hit their fire truck at a busy intersection, causing it to roll several times; and

WHEREAS, an admired firefighter with decades of experience, Danny Altice desired to help his fellow neighbors and joined the Rocky Mount Volunteer Fire Department in 1963 when he was just 20 years old; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Danny Altice responded to countless calls to battle fires, educated the public on fire prevention, and generously shared his expertise with new generations of firefighters; and

WHEREAS, an able administrator and strong leader, Danny Altice led the Rocky Mount Volunteer Fire Department as chief from 1977 to 1984, working diligently to fulfill the department’s mission of service to and protection of the community; and

WHEREAS, in 2008 Danny Altice received the coveted Lifetime Achievement Service Recognition Award for his 45 years of exemplary service to his fellow firefighters and the Rocky Mount community; and

WHEREAS, Danny Altice’s tragic death is a reminder of the dangers faced daily by the thousands of volunteer fire and rescue personnel throughout the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep convictions and strength of character, Danny Altice leaves behind a lasting legacy of courage, selfless commitment, and dedication to the safety and welfare of his neighbors; and

WHEREAS, Danny Altice will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his fiancee Frances; children, William and Christie and their wonderful families; and numerous other family members, friends, and the residents of Rocky Mount; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the untimely loss of William Daniel Altice; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William Daniel Altice as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his life of service to his community.
