Celebrating the life of Posey W. Dillon.

WHEREAS, Posey W. Dillon, the beloved fire chief of the Rocky Mount Volunteer Fire Department and vice mayor of the Town of Rocky Mount, died in the line of duty on July 26, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Posey Dillon and William “Danny” Altice, both longtime members of the Rocky Mount Volunteer Fire Department, were en route to a call when an SUV hit their fire truck at a busy intersection, causing it to roll several times; and

WHEREAS, a 33-year veteran, Posey Dillon joined the Rocky Mount Volunteer Fire Department in 1977 and served as captain and assistant chief before being promoted to fire chief in 1990; and

WHEREAS, known for his unflagging dedication to the department and community, Posey Dillon worked diligently to ensure the best training and equipment for the firefighters, oversaw the department’s fire prevention and public education efforts, and responded to countless calls himself; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his duties with the Rocky Mount Volunteer Fire Department, Posey Dillon also served on the Town Council from 1980 to 2000 and was reappointed in 2006; he served as vice mayor from 1992 to 2000 and had been serving as vice mayor since 2008; and

WHEREAS, respected and admired throughout the community, Posey Dillon served on numerous town committees over the years and was also a member of the West Piedmont Planning District Commission from 1982 to 1993; and

WHEREAS, a valued and hard-working employee, Posey Dillon had just retired from American Electric Power on June 1, 2010, after 30 years of exemplary service to the company; and

WHEREAS, a man of great faith, Posey Dillon was a longtime member of Glade Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and finance director; and

WHEREAS, Posey Dillon’s tragic death is a reminder of the dangers faced daily by the thousands of volunteer fire and rescue personnel throughout the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, a true public servant, Posey Dillon selflessly devoted immeasurable hours to ensure the safety of his fellow neighbors and efficient and effective government for local residents; and

WHEREAS, Posey Dillon will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife of 35 years, Ann; his mother, Hilda; and numerous other family members, friends, and the residents of Rocky Mount; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the untimely loss of Posey W. Dillon; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Posey W. Dillon as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his life of service to his community.
