Celebrating the life of Bradford Burleson Self.

WHEREAS, Bradford Burleson Self, an admired resident of Fairfax County who brought great joy to his family and friends, died on September 28, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Arlington, Bradford “Brad” Self was born on May 29, 1972, to loving parents Richard and Tracy Self and was the beloved brother of Courtney and Lauren; and

WHEREAS, Brad Self was a man who faced life with an exuberant spirit despite numerous health challenges and disabilities, including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and a major heart defect; and

WHEREAS, Brad Self received expert care and attention as a longtime resident of the Northern Virginia Training Center and graduated from the Kilmer Center and attended Central Fairfax Services; and

WHEREAS, determined to live life to its fullest, Brad Self enjoyed listening to music, throwing a ball, being outdoors, attending church, and going for walks in his wheelchair; and

WHEREAS, Brad Self was a proud participant in the Special Olympics, where he had the opportunity to compete against others while making new friends; and

WHEREAS, Brad Self loved to meet new people and never missed an opportunity to say hello or grasp an arm in fellowship; he even once grabbed the tie of Governor James Gilmore to say hello when the governor visited the Northern Virginia Training Center; and

WHEREAS, known for his huge smile and big laugh, Brad Self found great joy in his family and friends, who in turn learned from him the importance of slowing down and taking time to observe and enjoy the present moment; and

WHEREAS, Brad Self will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his parents, Richard and Tracy; sisters, Courtney and Lauren and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved resident of Fairfax County, Bradford Burleson Self; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Bradford Burleson Self as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
