HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 689
Celebrating the life of John Howlett Woodfin.

WHEREAS, John Howlett Woodfin of Richmond, a respected businessman and devoted community leader, died on December 15, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Richmond, John Woodfin graduated from Hermitage High School, where he was a member of the track, basketball, and football teams and was named to the All-Metro football team; and

WHEREAS, John Woodfin received a bachelor’s degree from the Virginia Military Institute, where he was a Cadet Captain, Distinguished Military Graduate, and member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity; and

WHEREAS, after his graduation, John Woodfin was commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers and proudly served his country as an Airborne Ranger from 1961 to 1964; and

WHEREAS, after his distinguished military service, John Woodfin worked for over a decade for petroleum giant Exxon, where he brought the same discipline and devotion to duty that characterized all his endeavors; and

WHEREAS, in 1977 John Woodfin decided to go into business for himself and returned to Richmond to found a small heating oil company, Woodfin Oil, that would grow to become one of the largest privately held petroleum businesses in Virginia and a leader in commercial and industrial HVAC contracting; and

WHEREAS, a man of immense integrity, John Woodfin took great pride in providing experienced help and quality customer service to his clients and a positive work environment for his employees; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to his hometown, John Woodfin generously gave of his time and talents to numerous organizations, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond, Retail Merchants Association, Benedictine High School Board of Trustees, Kiwanis Club of Richmond, Forum Club, and The Steward School Foundation; and

WHEREAS, John Woodfin also served as the chair and cochair of the American Heart Association’s Richmond Heart Ball for the past two years, working diligently with other volunteers to create a memorable event that would raise much needed funds; and

WHEREAS, a proud alumnus, John Woodfin maintained his ties with his beloved alma mater as a member of the VMI Richmond Club and VMI Alumni Board; and

WHEREAS, John Woodfin lived his faith through his actions and worshipped at First Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon and elder and faithful member of the Covenant Class; and

WHEREAS, a humble man, John Woodfin worked diligently throughout his life to serve others and leaves behind a sterling legacy of service to his family, business, community, and country that others may emulate; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, John Woodfin will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loving wife of 49 years, Anne; children Suzanne and Jack and their wonderful families; and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected businessman and community leader, John Howlett Woodfin; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John Howlett Woodfin as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
