2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, osteoporosis, a disease characterized by low bone mass, structural deterioration of bone, and increased susceptibility to fractures, is a public health threat for an estimated 44 million Americans; and
WHEREAS, the National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that one-half of all women over the age of 50 and one quarter of all men over the age of 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis; and
WHEREAS, osteoporosis can lead to reduced mobility, pain, isolation, depression, and increased risk of death resulting from complications of treatment for broken bones, as well as other health risks; and
WHEREAS, osteoporosis imposes significant costs on individuals and society, including an estimated $19 billion to treat two million fractures in 2005, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation; and
WHEREAS, harms imposed by osteoporosis may be reduced or eliminated through education and awareness; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate May 10th, in 2011 and in each succeeding year, as Osteoporosis Awareness Day in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates post the designation of this day on the General Assembly's website.
