2011 SESSION
11103117DWHEREAS, from 2001 through 2010, members of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association Winchester Chapter 180 donated approximately $40,000 to support research into the cause, prevention, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease; and
WHEREAS, in 2010 more than 130,000 Virginians were living with Alzheimer’s disease, an incurable form of dementia that limits a person’s cognitive ability, impairs a person’s memory, and can permanently alter a person’s character; and
WHEREAS, in 2010 the Alzheimer’s Association and the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) celebrated the 25th anniversary of the NARFE Alzheimer’s Fund, a partnership created to raise money to support Alzheimer’s disease research; and
WHEREAS, members of NARFE have donated more than $8.5 million to the NARFE Alzheimer’s Fund since 1985, and have committed to donating a total of $9 million by February of 2011; and
WHEREAS, one hundred percent of the NARFE Alzheimer’s Fund proceeds finance Alzheimer’s disease research; and
WHEREAS, at the 2010 NARFE Convention, the Virginia Federation of Chapters won the award for the highest total giving in the past year, with a total of $66,270; and
WHEREAS, the NARFE Winchester Chapter 180 is one of the 59 individual chapters that compose the Virginia Federation of Chapters; and
WHEREAS, the NARFE Winchester Chapter 180 raises funds for the NARFE Alzheimer’s Fund through individual monthly contributions, an annual silent auction in August, a special collection drive during National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month in November, estate donations, and other magnanimous support of its members; and
WHEREAS, members of the NARFE Winchester Chapter 180 have shown their unflagging commitment to finding the cause of Alzheimer’s disease and developing a cure through their munificent donations to the NARFE Alzheimer’s Fund; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the members of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association Winchester Chapter 180 for their generous donation for Alzheimer’s disease research; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jane Beaudoin, president of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association Winchester Chapter 180, as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for their efforts at eradicating Alzheimer’s disease.
