HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 664
Celebrating the life of Sam Lorenzo Callis.

WHEREAS, Sam Lorenzo Callis of Suffolk, a beloved father, community supporter, and involved citizen, died on October 18, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of North Carolina, Sam Callis was born September 6, 1918, to loving parents Samuel A. and Cora Meadows Callis and was one of eight siblings; and

WHEREAS, Sam Callis married the love of his life, the late Jessie Hoggard, with whom he enjoyed 54 years of marriage, and together they raised four sons; and

WHEREAS, a hard-working and valued employee, Sam Callis retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a welder; he then worked for Atlantic Wood Industries and retired again from the Department of Transportation as a bridge tender; and

WHEREAS, a longtime resident of Suffolk, Sam Callis was also a farmer and was actively involved in community service as a member of the Suffolk Moose Lodge #141, the Ruritan Club, and Woodmen of the World; and

WHEREAS, Sam Callis was passionate about the welfare of his beloved city and knowledgeable about the issues it faced; he attended city council meetings on a regular basis for almost two decades and freely contributed his ideas and opinions to the council; and

WHEREAS, throughout a long and productive life, Sam Callis generously gave of his time and talents to serve his family and community; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Sam Callis will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his four sons, Whitlow, Bill, Fred, and Sammy, and their wives; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the loss of a beloved father, community supporter, and involved citizen, Sam Lorenzo Callis; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sam Lorenzo Callis as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
