11102021DWHEREAS, Norma Hoffman, an esteemed citizen of Fairfax County, received the Fairfax County Park Authority’s 2010 Elly Doyle Park Service Award for her decades of exemplary service to Huntley Meadows Park; and
WHEREAS, Norma Hoffman began her involvement with Huntley Meadows Park in 1975 when she heard about a project that would have placed a highway through the park; and
WHEREAS, Norma Hoffman valued the open space teeming with wildlife and decided to help form the group Citizens Alliance to Save Huntley Meadows by knocking on doors and telephoning neighbors; and
WHEREAS, an energetic and spirited woman, Norma Hoffman convinced a law firm based in Washington, D.C., to advocate for the park pro bono; the firm presented expert testimony on the environmental importance of the low-lying wetland areas in the park; and
WHEREAS, the fight surrounding whether or not to put a highway through the park continued for 15 years until county officials finally decided against the project; and
WHEREAS, after the long struggle, Norma Hoffman decided to found a nonprofit organization, Friends of Huntley Meadows Park, that would work to protect and preserve the park for future generations; and
WHEREAS, Norma Hoffman, now 85, continues to help out at the front desk during the week and occasionally conducts classes and tours for school children, educating them on the plant and animal life contained in the park; and
WHEREAS, Norma Hoffman’s passionate devotion and hard work have helped to preserve Huntley Meadows Park, an oasis of nature in the midst of a densely populated suburban area, for local residents and visitors to enjoy; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Norma Hoffman on her receipt of the Fairfax County Park Authority’s 2010 Elly Doyle Park Service Award; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Norma Hoffman as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for her commitment to protecting and preserving Huntley Meadows Park.
