11101957DWHEREAS, Amherst County and its proud citizens will celebrate the County’s historic 250th anniversary in 2011; and
WHEREAS, Amherst County was established on May 1, 1761, by an act of the Virginia General Assembly as a result of the population growth and development in Central Virginia; and
WHEREAS, during the 1700s and 1800s, Amherst County residents grew tobacco and later orchards of apples and other crops on the County’s rich and fertile lands; and
WHEREAS, the Rucker brothers, residents of Amherst County, designed and built shallow river craft known as batteaus to transport the tobacco and other agricultural products down the James River and other tributaries to Richmond and other locations for distribution; and
WHEREAS, Amherst County has continued to grow by effectively promoting the beauty, integrity, and quality of life in the County and providing bountiful job opportunities along with excellence in education; and
WHEREAS, Amherst County citizens have consistently valued the County’s history, treasured landmarks, community events, and their fellow neighbors; and
WHEREAS, the first 250 years of Amherst County have been fruitful in experience and forward-looking ventures; and
WHEREAS, on April 30, 2011, Amherst County residents and friends will gather at the Amherst County High School to joyously celebrate the 250th anniversary of the establishment of Amherst County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Amherst County on the occasion of its historic 250th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the chair of the Amherst County Board of Supervisors as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations, admiration for the County’s rich history and contributions to the Commonwealth, and best wishes in all its future endeavors.
